Itinerary

This Okavango Delta Botswana Safari begins in Maun, the travel hub for exploring the Okavango Delta. Leaving the bustling town of Maun we make our way to Khwai village, about three and a half hours' drive away.

Arriving at the remote Khwai village, we head to Khwai Guest House, our comfortable base for the next three nights. Khwai village is a small rural settlement located on the fringes of the famous Moremi Game Reserve, the only official reserve in the Okavango Delta.

On this budget-friendly Botswana Safari, you get to experience a combination of authentic cultural encounters in the local village and explore the Okavango Delta - one of Africa's best wildlife destinations. We spend two days exploring this wild part of Botswana, visiting the traditional village and both the community-run Khwai Wildlife Concession and the prestigious Moremi Game Reserve, covering the eastern part of the pristine delta ecosystem.

Our stay at Khwai Guest House is on an all-inclusive basis (full board including meals, activities, and park fees).

On days two and three of our Okavango Delta Botswana Safari we wake at sunrise. Our days start with an early breakfast before we set off on our morning adventure. We return to the Khwai Guest House for lunch at about midday, followed by free time to rest and relax. At about 15h30 or 16h00 (depending on the season) we embark on our afternoon activity, returning in time for a tasty dinner prepared on the campfire.

Activities include three-hour game drives in the Khwai Concession and in the Moremi Game Reserve, full-day game drives in Khwai Concession and/or Moremi Game Reserve (subject to availability on arrival), and night drives. Then there are mokoro trips, lasting about two and a half hours, and cultural excursions that take about two hours. The Khwai Guest House also offers thrilling game walks (in season).

The Khwai Guest House is set on large grounds in Khwai village, serving as an ideal base for spending time in the traditional settlement of Khwai. You can walk around the rural village and meet the locals, gaining insight into their unique way of life. Take your time exploring the African traditions and age-old customs that have survived in this remote community of Botswana.

Game viewing takes place in Moremi Game Reserve, one of Southern Africa's finest wildlife reserves, and the top-notch Khwai Concession Area of Botswana. The Khwai Guest House borders both wilderness areas, which are home to an impressive diversity of animals, plants, and birds. There are plenty of large mammals to be seen in the area, including elephants, buffalos, and predators such as lions, wild dogs and leopards. The wild animals move freely between Moremi and Khwai, which is a lesser-known wildlife gem. Exploring the range of habitats, from indigenous forests to open floodplains, we are sure to encounter all kinds of wildlife, other creatures, and birds.

Our days are spent embarking on game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles and taking mokoro trips along the delta channels with local guides. Mekoros are the traditional style canoes used to navigate the watery Okavango Delta of Botswana. Gliding on the tranquil waterways and lagoons in the untamed African bush, you can sit back and take in the wild environment, looking out for wildlife and birds as your guide stands in the back of your mokoro poling the vessel along.

If conditions allow then we venture out on nature walks with the experienced local guides. Walking in the African bush is one of the best ways to get a real sense of the natural habitat and see its creatures and plants up close. Heading into the bush on foot is also a thrilling experience as we may encounter large animals at any moment!
